Wishing for the dry spell

It has been hot lately. Almost like summer hot. Today it's raining. Drizzling. I actually like the hotness and sun better because the past years super rainy weather has worn me out. I want the dry spell back.

Is this the year?

My mulberry bush makes buds every year but it never bears any fruit. I live in hope.
Maybe this is the year.

Monumental

This is the first time I am posting an image of a rock here. I love rocks. This one is on my backyard. The arvo sunshine is from July 27th. Isn't it beautiful? To me it seems like the head of a sleeping owl...

Perfection

It has been an extremely disappointing day. Therefore I went outside, did some sawing and digging first and then took a few photos. This is what I would call a healing image.

Bougainvillea in winter

It was raining for a few days - again.. Today looks good so far. Here is another nostalgic winter warmer photo from a week ago.

Winter sky, still days

This is what the winter sky used to look like in Brisbane years ago. Sweet memories. I love the crisp air and full-blown blue sky. For the past few years it has been more than often overcast, cloudy, or rainy... Therefore I had to take a winter photo of the trees and the sky. To remind myself that the blue still exists.

Soft ball

I am sure that the headline is going to mislead a lot of sports fans who google their favourite sport... Apologies.. but I am not going to change it. This is a soft ball of a flower. Like a sweet dream with speckles!

Stages of change

In the beginning you are new, fresh and bursting to start the journey, then you flourish for a brief moment, you are beaming, and then you start to weaken, drying up, withering... Finally you fall off from the branch. You become earth again.

Winter warmers

I have no excuse why I have not been updating the blog. Except I have not been taking a lot of flower photos lately. Except for the past couple of days.
When I meditated this morning it came to my mind how these flowers would look wonderful as a backdrop in a room. Wall paper material? Wall flowers...? :)

I did it!

I finally went to the backyard with my camera... Why was it so hard?!? Just asking as I don't get it... Anyway, here is one of the images from half an hour ago. I am fairly pleased with this one. It is a bit mysterious...

Pep talk to myself

I really have to get back to photography. This is ridiculous.... No time?!
This is an image from a couple months back.
I am going to photograph something after this post, in this afternoon. No two ways about it!

Memory

Oh dear, it has really been a while since I was here. I have been busy. Clearly. I have not even taken any photos... This bush is from the meditation course. I am still meditating but only 1 hour each morning. I have enrolled to a day-long meditation course in the end of May though. The technique is still the same. It works for me. I am looking forward to the course. I can feel the benefits. That is why I continue. Why else would I wake up every morning an hour "too early"? I am also planning to do the 10-day course again - maybe in November once the university is over for the year.

Fireworks

My neighbour across the road loves these flowers and he has these growing on his front yard. You could say he is a bit obsessed with these. Like I had another neighbour down the road and he was crazy about roses. He has passed now. No more roses on that yard unfortunately...

Looks like the grevillea is 'fireworking' in this image, eh? Or maybe it is just little matchsticks reaching out to you? In some ways it seems to be spinning... Or is it just my eyes..?

Please pat me, says the flower

What about this little one... Doesn't it look like a dog wanting a pat really badly? It seems I am projecting animal elements on my flower images nowadays... Maybe it is the art therapy's effect on me - free association and flow of thoughts to figure out what is going on in my mind. Here we come Freud, you old bugger!

Not the usual angle

Sometimes a new angle to the same old, same old is worth taking. The gerbera from underneath looks very elegant, I think. It makes me think of Russian women in the 1980's, Audrey Hepburn and tribal celebrations. Almost simultaneously. Go figure.

Another bud

Here is an image of a flower that does not exist anymore. The rain tainted this one. It fell on the ground and that was it. Gone. But in this picture it is still very much alive, looking very fleshy and powerful. Very red with a sharp bud coming out.

Darling Buds of Autumn

We had a break from the rain today. It was really good. I am going for a walk with a friend in 15 minutes. It has been probably three weeks since our last walk. Mostly because of the rain. How we all wish it would stop now. Especially the people who live in flood areas.

I just love buds. The wait. What will actually come out. These buds have white, fuzzy stars inside them.

Yellow buds

It has been a disappointing day in many respects... therefore I really need cheering up. How about some home-made pizza, a glass of wine and official publication of some yellow buds in a dreamy shot?

Let's remember: Everything changes, all the time, regardless... Good days tend to happen at some point, statistically speaking. And 'good', of course, is always relative and contextual. For me, a day is good when I am able to recover well and quickly from disappointments. And that has just happened! Wow! Happy weekend!

Waxy

Days fly by. Studying is rewarding but tiresome. I am so glad it has not been 20 years since I finished my other degree in Australia. I can now utilise all the study skills and knowledge that I gathered just a few years ago. Somehow Masters feels "easier" than Bachelors... Maybe because I do not have the barriers as high up this time. I know the language, the jargon, I am not worried about formulating essays and I know how to "read" texts. Note taking has never been a problem anyway. And we have been actually stressed that it is perfectly ok not to strive for high distinctions if you want to have a life at the same time... Thank you for that!

Here is a red, waxy beauty from the "hidden" part of my back yard.

Unidentied flying flower (UFF)

I cannot resist publishing this image. I have a couple of other versions of this actually very unremarkable little flower. I will put them in this blog later.
PS. It has been raining MADLY lately.

Wrapped

This is from yesterday. Look how tightly the flower is wrapped up before opening. Amazing. And I would have never noticed it unless I looked at it through my camera.
PS. It keeps raining like no end.

Hibiscus in a new light

I am so excited! It has not been raining, really, for a couple of days, and today it is sunny.. so I just returned from the back and front yard... and I got some great new shots! Who knows, maybe I will use this blog or some of its contents as part of my Art Therapy Masters research project next year...

When there is light

This is getting a bit boring now but it is still raining here. Not just at this moment but the sky is grey, and the forecast predicts rains for the coming few days pretty much. Well, I cannot help that, can I, so the only thing I can do is to blog of images of sunny days... Here is one!

Memories

It is raining again. The laundry has been on the line for about four days now. It will rain again tomorrow. We still have the sandbags from the earlier rains around the patio tiles in the corner of the house.
Here is an image from my backyard from the days when it was still sunny and gorgeous. Oh, those were the days...

Shadows, water, fuchsia

I took this image at a nursery before Christmas. I should actually go and do another round in local nurseries to get new images... I saw an ad about an orchid exhibition happening soon but it is a bit further away. I do not feel like travelling far... On the other hand orchids are fascinating looking plants. Dilemma, clearly.

Another

Yesterday, whilst working and visiting clients' houses, I stopped to smell roses before going in. It is one of my premeditated actions in life nowadays - when I see roses, I stop to smell them. I love the scent of roses...

I was also let go of my job last night, along with many others. It is a disappointment as I thought I would get to work at least two more weeks. Goodbye cash flow!

Back to brighter topics: There is usually only one flower at a time on the yellow hibiscus bush on my front yard. This one came about a couple of days ago.

Out of this world

I took this image a couple of days ago of a hibiscus flowering on my front yard. There is something about hibiscuses that I cannot get past. They are amazing looking when they flower. Especially the cheeky tongue that is poking out!

Red linings

I am still working within the community recovery for a few more days, until the situation winds down. It is amazing to learn what each individual considers as hardship. There is a person who has severe depression, lives in a flooded and muddy caravan, has lost everything except her dog, and who is responsible for caring her elderly, sick parents, and then there is person who complains about her pool getting so dirty in the storm that she is entitled to goverment assistance to get it cleaned. I am speechless.
I am getting excited about the art therapy studies. I looked through the list of readings, and oh my, it is a long list......

Here is an image of juicy succulent leaves from my backyard (before the storms).

Dinos, claws, nature

Copyright Kirsi Reinikka 2013

Hey, I have been a bit busy doing volunteer work and have not had time to contribute in this site. I am posting this image although it is actually from the island I went to on Christmas holidays. It is the same 'orchid' I posted an image in January. The angle is different in this picture. I like this image. It reminds me of meccano toys that look like dinosaurs and 'terrible claws' (aka the flower in the corner).

The cactus flowered again! It had two flowers but they did not have the same exquisite, heady scent as couple of months ago. These did not smell like potatoes afterwards either. I do not understand but what the heck - nature is really funny... Except when it is cruel, like now with the bush fires and floods...

Bending

There could be another storm cycle like this coming up within two months. We had the devastating Brisbane and Ipswich floods just two years ago and now this. I really feel for the surf life savers and helicopter rescuers and all the others, especially the volunteers, that are dedicated to saving human lives. Many of the people they saved did not follow the given evacuation or other instructions in the first place. But that is the way it is, some people save lives and some people put others at risk. A cycle.

Here is an image of a rose that is not giving up.

Surviving

The storm is moving to NSW now but it is still rainy here. I have been reading Lucy Irvine´s book Castaway for the past week. She and her companion G were so unprepared for their one-year-long island experience in the Torres Strait that it baffles me. What were they thinking?? And it was G´s third attempt... Some people do not seem to learn from their experiences... Lucy and G´s adventure sounds like a suicide mission. Anyway, they were suffering from lack of water at some point. I have not got to that part the wet season starts... In Tom Neale´s book Tom was very well prepared, maybe that is why it is a pleasurable read; I do not have to get frustrated for him. He knew what he was doing whereas Lucy and G are incompatible and ill-prepared. Lucy´s motive to pair up with G never comes clear, or least I am not that far in the book, but maybe it was her desire for fame? Which does not seem like a good motivation to move to a deserted island with a whinging verbal abuser for a year. On the other hand there are always two sides to the story... Anyway, why I am writing about the these books (again) is that when these huge rainfalls torment us at the moment I just try to imagine how would it feel to be on an island in the middle of Pacific, and not sure whether the hut is going to take the beating, and wheather the beans and tomatoes are going to survive, not to mention if a giant swell would swipe me away...

The good thing is, naturally, that there is a lot of useful debris on the beaches after the storms. Heheh.

Here is an image of an flower on a beautifully dry day.
